George, let me perpose this question to you, because nobody on hey mow can seem to answer it. What would be the proper distance between the starter and the ring gear? Some people say .004 and others say .010 and where would that measurement be taken from. The starter to the block? or the Bendix to the ring gear?

if it were me, I would go back to one of the old auto shop manuals where chevy first started using the shim type starters and look there. The best I remember it was .014 inch measured between the starter drive tooth point and the bottom of the matching flywheel teath V with the drive pushed up in the engage mode.     johnboy

Agghhh but it isn't a Chevy. It's a mower. You cannot be told a specific measurement and it be right thats why ARC supplies so many shims with the flywheel when they sell it. Due to block imperfections (Casting) no two are identicle. I shim mine so the two are with in .010 of bottoming out in the gears pitch. Does that make sense. AND you can't really measure that with a feeler gauge you have to eye ball it. I pull the starter pinion up with a small screw driver with it bolted on to check this.  If I don't like it I shim it differently then recheck it.

Thanks George, I just diden't know where they were taking the measurement from. I almost got it I need to shim it in a few more thousands and I'll be good to go.
